I travel to nuclear targets in China identified in the Atomic Weapons Requirements Study for 1959, photographing what exists at these coordinates today and printing the images as radioactive uranotypes. Produced by the United States Strategic Air Command in 1956 and published by the National Security Archive in 2015, the more than 800-page document is the most comprehensive list of Cold War nuclear targets ever declassified.
Airport runways disappear beneath university campuses and crawfish restaurants. Winter Olympians soar between cooling towers and blast furnaces. Shipyards house shopping malls and wedding venues. Many of these industrial sites and airfields were built by foreign imperial powers before they were later designated as U.S. nuclear targets. Today, many of these same sites are being remade through China’s rapid urban renewal and modernization. What links nearly every site I have photographed is the same target category: 275, POPULATION. Human life was reduced to another category of destruction.
